Nepal Type Approval by Technology

Bluetooth and BLE Devices
Classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) products
Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices require NTA Type Approval before import and use in Nepal. This includes headsets, speakers, keyboards, mice, wearables, medical accessories and industrial Bluetooth modules. BLE-based IoT sensor and beacon products also fall within scope.
Documentation note: RF and EMC test reports covering the 2.4 GHz ISM band are typically required. SAR reports may be required for body-worn devices.
Wi-Fi (802.11 WLAN) Devices
802.11 WLAN devices including access points and adapters
Wi-Fi devices operating on 2.4 GHz, 5.1 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands require NTA Type Approval. This includes Wi-Fi adapters, embedded Wi-Fi modules, smart home devices, IP cameras, printers with Wi-Fi and other WLAN-enabled equipment. The published NTA procedure specifies maximum EIRP and transmitter output power limits for WLAN equipment in the applicable frequency bands.
Documentation note: RF test reports covering all operating bands and modes are required. The indicative EIRP and transmitter power limits in the NTA procedure should be checked against your product specifications during pre-assessment.
IoT and M2M Equipment
Internet of Things and machine-to-machine connected devices
Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless devices are increasingly subject to NTA Type Approval requirements in Nepal. This includes cellular-connected IoT modules, LPWAN devices, smart utility meters, industrial wireless sensors and M2M gateways. The applicable procedure depends on the specific radio technology used in the device.
Documentation note: Documentation requirements depend on the wireless technology (cellular, Wi-Fi, BLE, LoRa, etc.). A pre-assessment is recommended to confirm the applicable requirements for your specific IoT product.
Automotive Wireless Components
Automotive wireless components, infotainment and telematics
Automotive wireless products require Nepal NTA Type Approval where they incorporate radio telecommunications functionality. This category includes telematics control units (TCU), embedded Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, remote keyless entry (RKE), passive keyless entry (PKE), smart keys, infotainment systems with wireless connectivity and eCall modules. Documentation note: Automotive wireless products often involve multiple radio technologies in a single unit, each requiring separate RF documentation. A full documentation review at pre-assessment stage is recommended.
Routers, Gateways and Access Points
Wireless routers, gateways and network access equipment
Wireless routers, broadband gateways, Wi-Fi access points and mesh networking equipment require NTA Type Approval. This includes consumer and enterprise wireless routers, industrial gateways, CPE modems with integrated Wi-Fi and mobile broadband routers.
Documentation note: RF reports for all supported bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz) and antenna configurations are required. Maximum EIRP should be checked against indicative NTA limits.
GSM, Cellular and Connected Devices
Mobile handsets, GSM modules and cellular-connected equipment
Mobile handsets, GSM modules, 3G/4G/5G devices and cellular-connected equipment require NTA Type Approval. The NTA procedure specifies technical requirements for mobile terminal equipment including SAR limits, minimum receiver sensitivity and EIRP limits. IMEI registration obligations also apply to cellular equipment.
Documentation note: Mobile handsets require SAR test reports. The NTA procedure specifies maximum SAR (2 W/kg over 10 g) and EIRP (33 ± 2 dBm) limits as published in the 2016 TAP-04 document, subject to current requirements.
RFID and NFC Devices
Radio-frequency identification and near-field communication
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) and near-field communication (NFC) devices used in Nepal may require NTA Type Approval depending on the operating frequency and power level. This includes contactless payment readers, access control systems, inventory management tags and NFC-enabled consumer electronics.
Documentation note: RFID and NFC products may be classified as low-power short-range devices under the NTA procedure. Applicability and documentation requirements should be confirmed through a pre-assessment.
Short-Range Devices (SRD)
Low-power short-range radio devices across permitted frequency bands
Low-power short-range radio devices (SRD) operating on permitted frequency bands require NTA Type Approval. This includes garage door openers, wireless doorbells, remote controls, wireless alarm systems, baby monitors and other low-power radio products. The applicable frequency bands and power limits are defined in the NTA procedure.
Documentation note: RF test reports covering operating frequency and output power are required. Power levels must remain within the limits specified in the applicable NTA procedure.
Smart Keys and Keyless Entry Systems
Automotive remote keyless entry, smart keys and access control
Automotive remote keyless entry (RKE) systems, passive keyless entry (PKE), smart keys and wireless access control devices require NTA Type Approval. These systems typically operate in specific low-power frequency bands. Nepal's vehicle fleet includes a significant share of international brands, creating ongoing demand for automotive wireless approvals.

Infotainment and Telematics Systems
In-vehicle infotainment systems, telematics units and connected head units
In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems incorporating wireless connectivity (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular) require NTA Type Approval for the radio elements. This includes head units, navigation systems with wireless connectivity, telematics units and connected display systems.
Documentation note: IVI systems often combine multiple radio technologies. Each radio interface typically requires separate RF documentation. A thorough pre-assessment is particularly valuable for complex multi-radio systems.
Wearable and Consumer Wireless Devices
Smart watches, fitness trackers and consumer wireless accessories
Smart watches, fitness trackers, wireless earphones, health monitoring devices and other consumer wearables with radio functionality require NTA Type Approval. These devices commonly incorporate Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.
Documentation note: Body-worn devices may require SAR test reports in addition to RF and EMC documentation.
Other Customer-Premises Radio Equipment
Customer-premises radio telecommunications equipment not listed above
