Nepal Automotive Wireless Type Approval

NTA Type Approval support for automotive wireless components — telematics units, smart keys, keyless entry, infotainment systems and connected vehicle equipment.

Automotive Wireless Equipment and Nepal Type Approval

Modern vehicles incorporate an increasing range of wireless and radio technology — from cellular telematics and connected infotainment to keyless entry and Bluetooth hands-free systems. Where any of these systems constitute customer-premises radio telecommunications equipment, they are subject to NTA Type Approval requirements when entering the Nepal market.

Automotive wireless type approval requirements are relevant to vehicle manufacturers, OEM suppliers providing wireless components, aftermarket accessory suppliers and automotive homologation consultancies managing Nepal market access.

We have experience supporting type approval applications for automotive wireless products including components manufactured by international automotive suppliers.

Note: Reference to automotive brands or manufacturers describes our experience with products bearing those brands. It does not imply any ongoing commercial relationship, partnership or authorisation by those manufacturers.

Automotive Wireless Equipment We Support

Remote and Passive Keyless Entry

Remote keyless entry (RKE) and passive keyless entry (PKE) systems are radio frequency devices subject to NTA Type Approval requirements. These systems typically operate in specific low-power frequency bands. Applications cover both original fitment and aftermarket key fob and entry systems.

RF test reports covering the operating frequency and output power level are required. Products must comply with applicable frequency and power limits under the current NTA procedure.

Smart Keys and Access Control

Smart key systems incorporating radio communication for vehicle access control, including ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning-assisted access and low-frequency wake-up systems, may require NTA Type Approval for their radio elements. The applicable requirements depend on the specific frequencies and technologies involved.

Multi-frequency smart key systems may involve multiple radio elements each requiring separate RF documentation. A pre-assessment is recommended to confirm the applicable requirements.

Telematics Control Units (TCU)

Telematics control units incorporating cellular (GSM/LTE/5G), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or GNSS-assisted radio elements require NTA Type Approval for each radio interface. TCUs are used in new vehicles and as aftermarket fleet management solutions.

TCUs typically combine multiple radio technologies. Each radio interface must be covered by appropriate RF, EMC and SAR (if applicable) test documentation.

In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) Systems

In-vehicle infotainment head units incorporating Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular data connectivity or digital radio require NTA Type Approval for the radio elements. The approval requirement applies both to OEM factory-fit units and aftermarket installation systems.

IVI systems may incorporate multiple wireless standards (Bluetooth, 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, LTE). A comprehensive documentation package covering each radio technology is required.

Automotive Bluetooth

Automotive Bluetooth systems for hands-free calling, audio streaming, diagnostics (OBD-II) and vehicle-to-device connectivity require NTA Type Approval. This includes both integrated OEM systems and standalone Bluetooth adapters intended for vehicle use.

Standard Bluetooth RF and EMC documentation applies. Body-SAR considerations depend on the installation and proximity to vehicle occupants.

Automotive Wi-Fi

In-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspots, connected vehicle platforms and automotive Wi-Fi modules require NTA Type Approval. This covers both dedicated automotive Wi-Fi access points and embedded Wi-Fi in IVI systems and telematics units.

RF documentation covering all supported Wi-Fi bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz) and antenna configurations is required.

Applicability of NTA Type Approval to specific automotive wireless products, and the technical requirements for each, must be confirmed through a current product-specific assessment.

Multi-Radio Automotive Products

Modern automotive telematics units and infotainment systems frequently incorporate multiple radio technologies — for example, a TCU may contain LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GNSS in a single unit. For type approval purposes, each radio interface typically needs to be covered by appropriate technical documentation.

A thorough document pre-assessment is particularly important for multi-radio automotive products. We review the complete radio technology inventory for the product and identify which interfaces are in scope for Nepal Type Approval, what documentation exists and what may need to be sourced.

Technology inventory review

Identify all radio interfaces in the product.

Documentation gap analysis

Map existing test reports against required documentation per interface.

Application pathway advice

Advise on the most efficient application approach for complex multi-radio products.
