Two Stages, One Approval Pathway
Under the published NTA Type Approval Working Procedure, a successful application first results in a provisional Type Approval certificate. Before that provisional certificate expires, the applicant must apply for the permanent periodic certificate.
These are sequential stages of the same regulatory pathway, not alternative options. Exact validity periods and conversion timelines are set by current NTA requirements and should be confirmed for each project.
What the Provisional Certificate Covers
The provisional certificate is issued after NTA reviews the application package and supporting technical documentation. It allows the approved equipment model to proceed under the conditions stated on the certificate.
Holding a provisional certificate does not remove the obligation to convert to a permanent periodic certificate within the applicable window. Missing that window can interrupt Nepal market access for the model.
What the Permanent Periodic Certificate Covers
The permanent periodic certificate is the longer-term stage of Type Approval. Before the provisional certificate expires, a conversion application is prepared and submitted with the documentation NTA requires for that stage.
Renewal and maintenance of the permanent certificate are separate ongoing obligations. Timelines and documentary requirements can change when NTA updates its procedure.
Practical Implications for Manufacturers and Importers
Plan documentation and project timelines around both stages from the outset. A common cause of delay is treating provisional issuance as the end of the project.
Coordinate early with your Nepal local representative so conversion and renewal dates are tracked. If you already hold international approvals (for example FCC, CE or RED), those reports may support the Nepal file, but they do not replace NTA’s own review.
