What Is Nepal NTA Type Approval?
Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) Type Approval is the mandatory certification process for customer-premises radio telecommunications equipment before it can be legally imported, sold or operated in Nepal.
The legal basis for Type Approval derives from the Telecommunications Act 2053 (1997) and the NTA Type Approval Working Procedure published by the authority.
Who Needs Type Approval?
Any party wishing to import, market or operate radio telecommunications equipment in Nepal requires NTA Type Approval for that equipment. This includes:
- International manufacturers distributing products in Nepal
- Importers of wireless, IoT, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or cellular devices
- Automotive suppliers providing wireless components for the Nepal market
- Distributors and resellers of radio telecommunications equipment
Foreign manufacturers cannot apply directly to NTA. The procedure requires an authorised local representative based in Nepal to submit the application on behalf of the foreign manufacturer.
What Equipment Is in Scope?
The NTA procedure covers customer-premises radio telecommunications equipment, including:
- GSM, UMTS, LTE and other mobile handsets and devices
- Wi-Fi (802.11x WLAN) equipment
- Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy devices
- Short-range and low-power radio devices
- IoT and M2M wireless modules
- Automotive wireless components
- RFID and NFC equipment
The Two Certificate Stages
A successful NTA Type Approval application results in a provisional certificate. The applicant must then apply for the permanent periodic certificate before the provisional certificate expires.
Both stages involve formal application and review by NTA. Exact validity periods and processing timelines are determined by current NTA requirements and workload.
Type Approval vs Import Licence
NTA Type Approval and an import licence are separate requirements. Type Approval is a technical certification. Import licences are governed by separate Government of Nepal requirements. Both may be required for equipment to be legally imported and sold in Nepal.
